DeTune doesn't detect my iPod

For most regular iPods (non-iOS devices) you will need to enable disk mode access for your iPod. This enables DeTune to access the library on your iPod. See this article for information on enabling disk mode. This is not required for iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches).

Be aware that most iPods will need to be ejected manually after enabling this option:

It is important to follow these instructions to avoid the device's filesystem becoming corrupted.

My iPod appears in DeTune briefly, then disappears again

As above - you need to enable disk mode access for your iPod.

My iPod is set to sync automatically when I connect it. My hard drive crashed and I had to reinstall Mac OS X. Can I use DeTune to get my music back from my iPod?

Yes. When you connect your iPod, iTunes will realise that the iPod was previously synced with a different library:

Press the Cancel button. Then make sure disk mode is enabled, and use DeTune as normal.

Why does DeTune need a filename template to copy the songs from my iPod?

When you put songs onto your iPod, the iPod doesn't keep track of the original filename. In fact, it usually stores your files with names that won't mean anything to you (such as "QBQX.mp3" and "NVHS.mp3"). When DeTune copies songs back to your Mac, the metadata stored in the iPod library are used to create a meaningful filename. The default template combines the album name, artist name, track name and number to create useful filenames, but you can change the template to include whatever information you like. See the manual for more information.

Can DeTune copy all my songs into a single directory?

Yes, this can be done by changing the filename template. The default template will create sub directories for each album, but you can change the template to copy all songs into a single directory. See the manual for more information.

DeTune detects my device incorrectly

If DeTune detects your device but shows the wrong icon or label, or displays your device type as "Unknown", we will need to update our list of iPod models. Open the DeTune Log from the Window menu. When your device is connected, information about the device is printed to the log:

Copy this information and send it to us. Thanks for helping to improve DeTune!

I have copied some songs back to my Mac, how do I get them into my iTunes library?

DeTune does not interact directly with iTunes. Once you have copied the songs back to your Mac, simply drag them into iTunes, or select "Add to Library" from the iTunes File menu.

Can I use DeTune to copy songs from my Mac into my iPod's library?

No, DeTune can copy your songs from your iPod to your Mac, but not the other way around. You still need to use iTunes to put songs onto your iPod. See the manual for information on accessing the file system of your device if you want to use it as a storage drive.
